Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family reported to have incredible anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. Most of these properties are attributed to a potent polyphenol in turmeric, called curcumin. When fresh, turmeric looks similar to ginger root, and can be peeled and chopped, before adding to a variety of dishes like sautéed vegetables or stir-fries, soups or broths, and even added raw to smoothies and juices. More commonly, it is dried and made into a powder. Turmeric is native to Asia, and has been prized for thousands of years for its medicinal properties, particularly in India.
